Topic: My Grandmother’s House

Themes: Love and understanding

Content Analysis: The poem, My Grandmother’s House by Kamala Surayya     expresses the poet’s memories of the love and affection that she experienced at her grandmother’s house. It also shows her desire to go back to those days because it is the only place where she received love.

Learning Outcomes:
          The learner,      1) identifies the mood of the poet.
                                   2) shares the atmosphere in the poem.
                                   3) develops imagination, creativity and aesthetic sense.
                                   4) constructs conversation.
Pre-requisites:
        The learner,       1) has already read similar poems
                                  2) has experienced the life in ancestral house.

CLASSROOM INTERACTION PROCEDURE
PUPILS’ RESPONSE

FRIENDLY TALK

Teacher creates a good rapport with the students by engaging in a friendly talk.

FAMILIARIZING WITH THE POET

Teacher shows the picture of Kamala Surayya and tells about her way and style of writing.



GETTING INTO THE LESSON

Teacher writes the title on the blackboard.

MY GRANDMOTHER’S HOUSE- KAMALA SURAYYA

Then she recites the poem with proper stress, tone, pronunciation, rhythm and intonation.

SILENT READING BY THE STUDENTS

Teacher asks the students to read the lines of the poem silently and refer to the glossary for the meaning of unfamiliar words.



GLOSSARY

Teacher introduces the unfamiliar words in the poem and writes the meaning on the blackboard:
·        peer – to look closely or carefully at someone or something.
·        despair – the feeling of having lost all hope.
·        brooding – sad or mysterious.

GROUP ACTIVITY

TRANSITION OF POEM TO CONVERSATION

Teacher asks the students to convert the poem to a conversation between Kamala Surayya and her husband.

CONVERSATION PRACTICE

Student1 (Kamala Surayya) – “Darling, do you know,    there is a house far away from here where I received lots of love?”

Student2 (Husband) – “Whose house?”

Student1 – “My grandmother’s house. Now she is no more. It is very dark there and snakes can be seen among the books”.

Student2 – “You lived there?”

Student1 - “Yes, I was too young then. I always wanted to go back. So many memories…….I just want to bring back those days….those lovable days”.



Student2 - “Really?”

Student1 – “Can you believe, darling that I lived in such a house. There I got so much love and was proud about myself?”

Student2 – “What happened now? Are you not happy?”

Student1 – “Now I feel I have lost my way and wandering here and there for a little drop of love, even at strangers’ doors”.

SUMMIMG UP THE POEM

Teacher recapitulates the poem.

FOLLOW UP ACTIVITY

Teacher gives the following assignment

Write an appreciation of the poem, My Grandmother’s House.
